The Slate Incident

The Insult Gilbert Calls Anne 'Carrots' Gilbert, trying to get Anne's attention, pulls her braid and calls her 'Carrots.' Anne, furious, breaks her slate over his head. Public Humiliation Mr. Phillips punishes Anne by making her stand on the platform with the words 'Ann Shirley has a very bad temper' written above her. Anne is mortified. Vow of Hatred Anne vows never to forgive Gilbert. She refuses his apology and ignores him for years.

Academic Rivalry

Competing for First Place Head of the Class Anne and Gilbert vie for top marks in spelling, arithmetic, and other subjects. Their rivalry pushes both to excel. Mutual Respect Despite their personal animosity, they respect each other's abilities. Anne secretly admires Gilbert's intelligence. The Elaine Rescue
